A low phenol/salicylate diet is often implemented along with another diet program. Many children with autism cannot process phenols adequately so high phenol foods must be eliminated.
Symptoms of phenol intolerance:
Dark circles under the eyes
Red cheeks, red ears
Self-injury
Head banging
Aggression
Poor impulse control
It can be impossible to eliminate all phenols so enzymes may be recommended to break down remaining phenols.
THIS CHART is incredibly helpful when watching phenols/salicylates. The fifth column indicates the phenol/salicylate content in common foods.
You can find another guide for phenol/salicylate levels in foods HERE.
